Why This Bassline Is Special

While It's My Life might seem simple at first listen, the bass part is full of understated brilliance. The flowing rhythm locks perfectly with the drums, the note choices weave effortlessly through the chords and Paul's technique makes for fluid movement around the fretboard.

It's a great study piece for:

🎸 Rhythmic Syncopation – The bass line consistently accents off beats and anticipates across the bar lines

🎸 Economy of movement – playing fluidly across the neck without unnecessary effort

Drum Track:

It's My Life Intro/Verse

We join the intro here on beat 2 (you can also play the Eb bass note leading into the line). The toughest hurdle here is mastering the feel due to the anticipated syncopations.

The bass line here creates an interesting harmony by way of 1st inversion Db major and F Minor chords.

It's My Life Pre Chorus

The Pre Chorus is the most technically demanding section of the song. The bass line outlines the progression, plays over the bar lines and bar centers and also creates yet another 1st inversion F major chord.

It's My Life Chorus

The chorus section is the least demanding section of the song and settles into a two bar groove pattern. However, the line still contains syncopated off beats throughout.

It's My Life Instrumental Section

This section of the song shifts key to Bb Minor. The bass line is very similar to the verse but works through only two chords: Bb Minor and F Minor.
