I Wish – Breakdown of a Stevie Wonder Classic (bass tabs and tutorial)

Today we’re going to take a look at a Stevie Wonder classic: I Wish from the Songs In The Key Of Life album.

There are two main riffs to deal with in this song and we’ll look at them both. We’re going to look at the notes in there, I’ll give some tips on technique and then we’re going to breakdown and analyse what’s going on from a harmony perspective. Analysing bass lines in this way can be a great way of understanding music theory and how it works in practice but it’s also a great help when it comes to learning and memorising a song. 1. Absolutely loved this lesson. Still at the newbie stage of learning scales (and not always sure why lol) but this was great for practice and understanding. Thanks so much Mark

  2. I believe that you said in the video, and again in your tab, that this was in Eb Dorian, which if so would put it in Db (five b’s), not Gb. I agree that it is Eb dorian and the key sig is wrong. I think it is in Db major.

    1. It could possibly be in Gb, the -6th, Aolian, but I lean towards Db Dorian. We had a cool discussion about this with the riff raff group that I play with and we came to that same conclusion, that its prolly Db Dorian but that it could (less likely) be Gb Aolian. But its not Gb Dorian.
