This week to celebrate the holiday season we’re looking at a simple chordal bass solo I’ve arranged for the Christmas song “Silent Night”
This is a traditional song written by Franz Gruber in 1818 and nearly everyone will have heard one of the thousands of different renditions of the tune at some point in time.
This solo is arranged around open strings as our root notes for the harmony so there’s less finger twisting chord voicings than the usual solo chordal pieces you might see.
Silent Night
Hi Mark,
That’s fantastic, I was waiting for something like that, easy but interesting, to use as a Christmas message, since I’m confined and there’s no chance to visit my family.
Cheers, all the best and Merry Christmas
Fernando
Merry Christmas Fernando hope your family well wishes
Fantastic …. Thanks
Steve
Awesome. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
What a great idea to give us these seasonal solos! I found the one from last year too. Tricky for me as a beginner but something rewarding to work on for the Christmas holiday. As complete beginners we need these glimpses of future possibilities to encourage us ! Great presentation (not sure I can do these chord shapes yet) but well explained and really nice arrangements. Thanks Mark !
Happy Holidays Mark.
I have been a fan of you and your channel from almost the beginning.
You are my favorite YouTube bass instructor.
Thanks for all the help over the years. jay
Thanks Mark – quality as always. Would be nice if you could annotate with chords…?
Well done mark. Thnxs
Mark,
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Happy 2021! Thank you for all your excellent teaching, lessons, courses, and being a generous and kind soul.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Great lessons and Silent Night is my favorite Christmas song.
Kindness is repaid back in so many ways.
This is great…Thanks!!
Thank you—-nice Christmas gift from you to your followers! And something for me to work on in isolation. All the best!
HI
Is this difficult, or is it just because I’m a noob?
Steve
Thanks heaps Mark, you reinforce my case to play Bass for our choirs Christmas Carols. Love your lessons mate, Keep yourself and Family safe.

Hello Mark; so beautiful thank you!! I played bass and took lessons for four years unfortunately I injured my hand and ultimately ended up quitting. My hand is healed and I can play but it’s been 18 months and my skills really declined. I’m having to go back to my beginner method books. I can’t play this song but I was feeling a little down about Christmas this year and this song is perfect; I’ll keep trying to play it, I likely won’t be able to but I’ll go back to some intermediate lessons about triads and chord construction; thank you for still being here.
Who said this was easy? Seriously, a favorite I need to know and practice I need to have. Never would think to do it this way. Thanks.
Lovely Mark, well explained and presented. This is a treat!
