This week we’re taking a look at the main bass riff from the song Dec 63 (Oh What A Night) by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, played by Don Ciccone.
This is a great riff to learn for beginner to intermediate players because it makes us of a complete major scale (giving you a little insight into how scales can be used) and, most importantly, it includes several ghost notes.
So in this lesson, we’ll take a look at the bass riff and I’ll show you a method for mastering the ghost note technique by way of what I call ‘home position’. This will help with playing ghost notes and also improve your overall technique and muting.

A real Ghostbuster!!!Who you gonna call? Talkingbass. of course! lol Great stuff.
Three days ago I just had a slight idea of what GHOSTNOTES might be, I didn’t realize them, didn’t care about them. Now I throw them in whenever I want, feel like I want to, even twins or tripples. And thanks to your “home position” I even rank just on the fly ;).
Again you’ve improved my playing – this time in less then 15 minutes!
Thank you for that. Your explanations and didactics are superb.
