This lesson I’m covering the main bass riff from the song Express Yourself by Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.
Express Yourself
You’ll probably recognise this famous line from a bunch of adverts as well as the NWA track of the same name, which sampled it. It’s very typical of the great soul records of the 60s and 70s, with a great natural ‘bounce’ in the way it interplays with the drum pattern.
It’s in E flat, and begins slightly unusually with the high note rather than jumping up from the low root note to the octave as is the usual custom. That aside, this is all about the feel of the notes and really locking into that distinctive rhythm.
Hey Mark
Got me a new bass yesterday, real excited about learning from you, thanks for making it so simple to follow along really appreciate it.
Thank’s
Ken
Though that sounds quite similar, in the downloadable notation you wrote the third note of the first bar (the second E♭) one octave lower than you actually play it in the video. Please don’t mind my little correction. Rock on! Michael
