Spain (Chick Corea) – How To Play THAT Tough Bass Part!

This last week saw the passing of jazz legend Chick Corea. Chick’s impact on jazz and music as a whole goes without saying and as a tribute to the great man I’m going to give you a breakdown of one of the lines that every jazz bass player should know. It’s THAT tricky part from the song Spain by Return To Forever, originally played by another jazz legend: Stanley Clarke!

Spain – Return To Forever

This line is counted in 2/2 (cut common time) so the foot counts half notes rather than quarter notes. However, I’ve specified the tempo of each track in quarter notes

  1. Ouch I had no idea Chick passed away last week RIP Chick!. I am a massive fan of his work particularly the Return to Forever material. According to Stanley it was Chick who inspired him to compose his own stuff. Sad loss of a brilliant musician and this piece Spain encapsulates his genius. Thanks Mark.
