Talking Bass With Jeff Berlin #2

This is the second interview with Jeff Berlin for Talkingbass. In this video we’ll be talking about Jeff’s views on bass education, his time in the Bill Bruford band and metronomes!!

Jeff made his name playing in the legendary Bill Bruford band of the 1970s alongside Allan Holdsworth and Dave Stewart. Since then he’s played with pretty much every major name in jazz as well as performing a huge number of sessions for artists in pretty much every style of music.

Jeff is also a major name in the world of bass education. He has taught in many music institutions across America and performed masterclasses all over the world promoting his non-nonsense, academic approach to teaching music and musical content that he developed through years of formal training in both the jazz and classical fields.

While his methods are very successful, Jeff has ran into pushback from certain areas of the bass community, mainly through his criticisms of various music institutions and some popular, high profile players with regard to their non-traditional approaches to teaching the instrument.

In this interview I’ll be playing devils advocate once more while delving into Jeff’s teaching philosophy, his now infamous opinion on metronomes and much, much more.
