Hey Mark, I enjoyed your Cruise Vlog I am a bit older than you and I worked full time in the day when there were no cell phones, CDs. internet. There was Live music, night clubs and vinyl, pop radio. That is all. Anybody who could play song or two could make a full time paycheck. Abundance of gigs. I lived through the decline. I have discussed the new full time opportunities cruise ships and resort areas have. So it was nice to hear the details. Just for amusement I will tell you a bit of my full time days. In junior high school and high school, I played about a 1000 gigs in a 6 year period. In high school I was working 7 night a week plus a double on Sunday so 8 gigs a week. I had a fight with the band leader when I told him I would need a night off for high school graduation. The singer intervened and said ” GIVE HIM THE NIGHT OFF he just kid and wants to celebrate! when I was 18, I took year off to catch on being a teenager and started going to concerts and festivals. I come from Boston and the British invasion was in full blast. I saw so many great bands 1968. I remember a buzz about a hot British band coming to town. Would be playing on Berklee Street in Boston at an old church no longer in service “Led Zeppelin” small venue about 150 people. everyone smoking pot. It was some concert. My ears rang for 3 days. Any way I am still at it. I have begun the Youtuber thing with slightly different approach. Focus on original composition and lessons including creative. I am impressed on your operation and playing/teaching technique. Once again thank you for the view on the modern full time performing musician.
Hi Mark.
Glad this blog came up as I get concerned as to why I am learning the bass.
Okay the position is this.
I am 70, already a musician ( some say), love the sound of the bass but I also suffer from forms of deafness.
I can hear all bass notes still but my main instruments are flute, fiddle and chromatic harmonica non of which I hear the high notes any more.
So….I am learning bass from your courses and after having had it three days I can jam along to some rock and country numbers I like.
I do this by ear but also know what key I am in.
This is the main reason I bought the bass….just to mind in neutral and jam along in my shed for my own entertainment because I love the sound of the bass and I can still hear it with my deafness.
I feel my deafness puts a stop to playing in a band.
It is an instrument that I want to learn properly though and that is why I have started on your courses.
A form of keeping the grey matter fluid.
I suppose the bass is one of the most useless instruments to learn to play unless one plays it in a band!
Or is it?????
Thats my question.
Any other loners out there?
Whats your take on this Mark?
Have I lost it?
