THIS WEEK we’re looking at fret markers and how they can REALLY help with navigating the fretboard. Beginner Bass Players often have no clue as to what the fret markers represent. Why would you if nobody told you?
Soooo, I’m going to give you 3 HUGE tips for using fret markers. The first tip might be fairly obvious but tips 2 and 3 could make a MASSIVE difference to your playing and the way you play bass!
Tip 1: Basic Fret Numbering
Fret Markers are numbered in order 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24
If you can learn the number of the fret markers it can be a little easier to navigate around the fretboard.
Tip 2: Bass Neck Repeats
The notes repeat at the 12th fret and all fret markers repeat beyond that point.
For example, the 3rd fret of the A string is a C. This means the 15th fret is also a C.
Tip 3: Notes On The Neck
Fret markers are great as waypoints for learning the notes on the neck.
We can use a basic pattern of the fret markers to learn the natural notes in order up the fretboard:
